The defending state champion Punahou boys soccer team defeated Kamehameha-Maui, 2-1, on a John Cowen golden goal one minute, 25 seconds into the first overtime period in the quarterfinals of the Meadow Gold Dairies/HHSAA Boys State Soccer tournament today at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Punahou (13-1-1), which needed a Chris Walker penalty kick with no time in regulation to send the game into overtime, plays first-time semifinalist Roosevelt tomorrow night at 8 in one semifinal. Kalani plays Leilehua in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. Cowen, a junior midfielder, scored after a rebound off a Nick Love shot rolled out to him and he shot a low 25-yarder under diving goalkeeper Chawn Villalon.

"It bounced out and it was instinct (to shoot)," Cowen said. "I didn't see the ball go in. I just saw the goalie dive."

It was Kamehameha's (15-1-2) first loss of the season, after winning the Maui Interscholastic League. Warriors coach Jayson Nakasone called the loss "heartbreaking."
