Hear about post-quake changes from media, state

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Community Media Council will sponsor a panel discussion on media and emergency response and measures taken to improve them since the Oct. 15 earthquakes knocked out power across much of the state.

The panel will talk about what's been done to strengthen media operations and improve emergency communications from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Ala Moana Hotel's Carnation Room. Cost is $20 including lunch.

Call Veronica at 596-2121 to reserve a space.

Attorney Chris Conybeare, a media specialist at the University of Hawai'i-West O'ahu, will moderate.

Panelists include Mark Platte, editor of The Honolulu Advertiser; Chuck Cotton, vice president and general manager of seven Honolulu radio stations owned by Clear Channel; Michael Titterton, general manager of Hawai'i Public Radio; Marsha Weinert, state liaison to the visitor industry and co-chair of the Comprehensive Communications Review Committee that proposed communications improvements after the Oct. 15 earthquakes; and Doug Carlson, communications consultant and writer of the Citizens Helping Officials Respond to Emergencies (CHORE) Web log. A representative from state Civil Defense has been invited.

Established in 1970, the Honolulu Community Media Council includes individuals from the community and media who seek to improve public access to information, strengthen First Amendment rights, broaden public understanding of the role of the media, and promote accurate and fair journalism in Hawai'i.
