Lifeguard swims big North Shore waves to rescue man

Advertiser Staff

A lifeguard swam through waves estimated at 15 feet this morning to rescue a 20-year-old man struggling in the waters at a surfing spot called "Off The Wall" near Sunset Beach on O'ahu's North Shore, officials said.

Another man in the surfing spot also reportedly struggled in the waters this morning, but swam to shore on his own, officials said.

Firefighters and city water safety officials at about 9 a.m. responded to the report of at least one swimmer in distress. A fire department helicopter also assisted in the rescue effort.
