Halekulani chef receives French Legion of Honor award

Advertiser Staff

Yves Garnier, head chef of Halekulani's lauded La Mer restaurant, was recently bestowed the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the state of France.

Frédéric Desagneaux, the consul general of France in San Francisco, and Patricia Lee, the honorary consul of France in Honolulu, will give the award to Garnier in an invitation-only reception at the Halekulani on Feb. 22.

As France's highest decoration, the National Order of the Legion of Honor, is granted for gallantry in military or civilian life for work that enhances the reputation of France through scholarship, arts, sciences and politics.

Garnier has been the chef de cuisine of La Mer since 1996. Before Halekulani, Garnier sharpened his culinary skills at fine-dining restaurants in Monte Carlo, San Francisco and Florida. Today he cooks what he calls "cuisine du soleil," or cuisine of the sun, a marriage of French cuisine and Hawaiian Island culture.
