Emeritus scholar to give 'World War II Leaders' lecture

A scholar of events tied to Nazi Germany will next week present a lecture titled "New Boundaries for the World: The Visions of Eight World War II Leaders" at Hawai'i Pacific University's Hawai'i Loa Campus.

Gerhard Weinberg is a William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also the author of several books including "Guide to Captured German Documents" and "The Foreign Policy of Hitler's Germany," discovered the previously unpublished sequel to Mein Kampf.

A German-born Jew, Wienberg fled Germany with his family shortly before World War II. He became an American citizen, served in the U.S. Army, earned a bachelor's degree in social studies from the State University of New York at Albany. He holds a master's degree and a doctorate in history from the University of Chicago. In 1999, he was awarded the American Historical Association Award for Scholarly Distinction.

The lecture, part of HPU's An Evening with the Humanities Lecture Series, will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at HPU's Windward campus, 45-045 Kamehameha Hwy in Kane'ohe. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
