TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"The O.C.," 8 p.m., Fox. After starting hot, this show will vanish after less than four seasons. Next week's episode, which pushes the story ahead six months, will be its last. First, however, there are some immediate concerns: An earthquake has just belted this ritzy, coastal turf. Kristen's baby-to-be is endangered. Julie and Kaitlin are trapped in an ice cream shop.

"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. Last week, the surgical interns were sent to a disaster site. Tonight's episode is the midsection of a three-week story.

OF NOTE

"King Kong" (2005), 5:45 p.m., HBO. With his "Lord of the Rings" films, director Peter Jackson showed the wonders that are possible when someone links great visuals with a smart story that makes sense. Why, then, did he follow with this film, which tries to get by on visuals alone?

"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. Two guest stars drop in: Lucy Liu plays a former classmate of Daniel, who needs her help. Jerry O'Connell plays a stranger who meets Alexis in a bar, where she's been sort of trapped with Wilhelmina.

"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. On his birthday, Earl wants to reflect on all the good he's done lately. At the party, however, people keep recalling his epic misdeeds from the past.

"The Office," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Ryan asks Michael to be a guest speaker at his school. Meanwhile, Pam has her first art show and Dwight battles a bat.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. In the mail, Grissom gets a miniature replica of the scene of a crime that has not yet happened. This is unnerving because the killer who used to create such replicas is dead.

"30 Rock," 8:30 p.m., NBC. When Liz tries to seem like a lenient boss, she ends up working long hours. Meanwhile, Jack makes the mistake of inviting Tracy to a gathering that includes the CEO (played by Rip Torn) of his parent company.

"Men in Trees," 9 p.m., ABC. The name makes this seem logical. Patrick meets Annie's mom and dad. Mom is played by Annie Potts.
