Chinese New Year festivities begin tonight

Advertiser Staff

The Year of the Boar is just about here and Chinese New Year festivities are kicking off today in Chinatown with traditional lion dances, firecrackers and celebration.

If you're new to the Islands and see a lion, put a dollar or two in its mouth for good luck.

There will be a Chinatown Open House from 5 to 10 p.m. today and again tomorrow at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, at Beretania Street, Maunakea Street and College Walk. Highlights include authentic culture with food vendors providing Chinese delicacies, from jai (vegetarian monk's food) to jook (Chinese rice soup), merchants selling their wares and lion dances.
