A Kane'ohe Bay Marine sent a dozen roses to his mother for Valentine's Day, said the mother's fiancee.

"It was really ironic that was the day he got killed," Donnie Moneymaker told the News Virginian newspaper.

Lance Cpl. Daniel Todd Morris, 19, of Raphine, Va., was killed during combat in Al Anbar province near Haqlaniyah on Wednesday, the military said.

He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, based in Kane'ohe Bay.

He graduated in 2005 from Wilson Memorial High School, where he was a member of the marching band.

"He wanted to go to Iraq. He wanted to relieve some other man who might be a father or a husband so he could come home to his family," former band leader Matt Baraclough told the News Virginian. "Tell me that's not honorable."

He was the son of Carol Morris Wendell and Billy Morris Jr.
