Kealakehe soccer coaches suspended from state event

Kealakehe High's varsity boys soccer head coach and assistant have been suspended from coaching their team for the remainder of the state tournament, according to Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association.

Head coach Urs Leuenberger and assistant Miles Nakahara also are banned from any and all areas of Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park, the site of the state tournament.

The tournament ends Saturday. Kealakehe plays its next game Saturday against Kapa'a at 4 p.m.

In a letter to Kealakehe principal Wilfred Murakami, Amemiya said Nakahara is suspended for "several acts of inappropriate behavior at the state tournament, and head coach Leuenberger is being suspended for his failure to control the actions of assistant coach Nakahara."

Amemiya said "the series of incidents lasted several hours, including before Kealakehe's 1 p.m. match Thursday and for over two hours after the completion of their match."

"There is always a remorse when something like this happens," Nakahara said. "I don't want to come here and make waves. it's no fun."

The coaches said they will abide by the HHSAA ruling.

Kealakehe coaches allegedly were upset at the pairings in which the Waveriders had to play Punahou in the first round of the 12-team tournament.

Punahou, the defending state champion, was runner-up in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Kealakehe was the No. 3 team in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.

Going into the tournament, Punahou was 11-1-1. Kealakehe was 13-1.

Punahou beat Kealakehe, 1-0, Wednesday, sending the Waveriders to the consolation bracket.

Kealakehe beat Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 5-0, Thursday in a consolation game.
