The city has issued a grant of $150,000 to the Hawai'i Bicycling League to teach fourth-grade students in O'ahu's public schools about bike education.Established in 1988, the BikeEd Hawai'i program includes five 45-minute sessions of on-bike instruction that includes instruction on the roads near the school. The program, taught by two teams, consists of three trained instructors per team, who visit a school for a week with a truck loaded with 30 bikes, helmets and safely vests.
Students are instructed in proper helmet fitting, bicycle safety checks and developing skills that focus on basic maneuvers such as driveway exits, right and left turns, proper behavior at stop signs and U-turns. They also teach students about street patterns and acceptable road behavior.
Hawai'i Bicycling League Executive Director Kristi Schulenberg thanked the city for its continued support of the program and as part of their commitment to make Honolulu a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly city. She said the city helps make it possible to educate O'ahu youth in safe cycling skills, which provide a foundation for safe cycling habits and an active lifestyle.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann praised the bicycling league for "a masterful job of encouraging bicycling and promoting safety among children and adults alike."
The mayor presented a check for $150,000 to the league yesterday at Ka'imiloa Elementary School in 'Ewa Beach.
