Kaimuki repeats as OIA boys basketball champion

Advertiser Staff

Beau Albrechtson scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and fellow senior forward Keone Reyes added 16 points Friday night to help Kaimuki defeat Kalaheo, 56-45, for its second straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball championship.

A raucous crowd of about 1,100 at McKinley's Student Council Gym watched Kaimuki, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improve to 11-5 in the regular and postseason and earn the OIA's No. 1 seed and first-round bye in next week's state tournament.

Reyes and Albrechtson swished back-to-back 3-pointers late in the third period to break a 31-31 tie and lead an 8-0 run, and the Bulldogs never trailed again.

The No. 4-ranked Mustangs (12-3) will begin state tournament play in Tuesday's first round.
