ESPN predicts Nevada a third seed in NCAA tourney

Associated Press

RENO, Nev. — The experts who predict where various college basketball teams will be seeded in the NCAA tournament next month continue to be confounded by No. 11 Nevada.

A sampling of some of the so-called "bracketologists" find the Wolf Pack currently angling for anywhere from a fifth seed to a third seed.

ESPN's Power 16 now has Nevada of the Western Athletic Conference listed as a third seed, up from a fourth seed a week ago.

Andy Glockner, the networks's college hoops editor, wrote this week that the 23-2 Wolf Pack's record is "impressive." He said their last 10 days of play in the WAC has been "a little sketchy." And he said they don't get a lot of points off the bench.

But he said Nevada is a good team that should be especially motivated come March after a disappointing loss to Montana in the first round of last year's tourney.

On the other end, Sporting News expert Kyle Veltrop predicts the Wolf Pack will "top out" as a fifth seed.

Veltrop said they have an excellent, experienced nucleus in Nick Fazekas, Marcelus Kemp and Ramon Sessions. But he said they lack some big wins over power opponents: "Nevada's record is stunning; the victims are not."

Various writers at collegehoops.net have Nevada as either a fourth or fifth seed.

Nevada has won six in a row and 16 of their last 17 after hanging on to defeat San Jose State 68-60 at home Wednesday night.

Nevada swept both games from Hawaii this season. One victory came in overtime when the Wolf Pack were without Fazekas. The other victory came on a controversial call in a home game.

The Wolf Pack host Northern Iowa (16-11, 7-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference) tomorrow in one of ESPNU's Bracket Buster games to be carried by ESPN2.
