Advertiser Staff

Nicole Mackey, a University of Hawai'i senior, won the 200-yard backstroke in an NCAA meet automatic qualifying time today at the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The competition was at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. Mackey, who won in 1 minute, 57.72 seconds, was named WAC Swimmer of the Year for the third consecutive year.

Six victories in seven events by Hawai'i swimmers today weren't enough to prevent Nevada from winning its first conference swimming title.

The Wolf Pack finished with 810.5 points. The defending champion Rainbow Wahine finished second with 730 points, and Northern Arizona was third with 625.

Three other UH swimmers won events in NCAA championship meet provisional times:

— Senior Bache' Atkins captured the 100 freestyle in 50.84 seconds.

— Senior Mia Broden won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.32.

— Senior Claudia Barasi took the 1,650 freestyle title in 16:39.95.

The Hawai'i 400 freestyle relay team won in an NCAA provisional time of 3:24.89.

Hawai'i senior Megan Farrow, who won the platform diving with 230.40 points, was named the WAC Diver of the Year. Nevada head coach Mike Shrader was named swimming coach of the year, while Hawai'i's Mike Brown won his third diving coach of the year honor.
