Kaua'i drunk drivers, speeders: Police on hunt for you

LIHU'E – The Kaua'i Police Department has announced plans to crack down on motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and on speeders, as well.
Police Lt. Mark Scribner said the department will be increasing the number of checkpoints around the island this year as part of the "52/12" statewide campaign, and will be checking for those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and for other traffic violations.
"Last year there were 14 traffic fatalities on Kaua'i, a record number, and so far this year, we have had two traffic deaths, compared to one this time in 2006," said Scribner. "We need to greatly reduce these statistics."
Scribner hopes that the checkpoints will help keep drunk drivers and those high on drugs off the streets.
"We want to make our roads as safe as possible for the community," he said.
In an effort to decrease alcohol-related traffic fatalities, the state Department of Transportation recently implemented a new sobriety checkpoint campaign statewide, "52/12 – You Drink, You Drive, You Lose."
