Rainbows outlast Long Beach State in water polo, 11-9

Sophomore Kelly Mason scored five goals — including two in the fourth quarter — to lead fourth-ranked Hawai'i to an 11-9 victory over No. 12 Long Beach State today in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Hawai'i is 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Long Beach State is 3-2 and 0-1.

With the match tied at 7 entering the fourth quarter, Anna

Sieprath scored on UH's first possession. LBSU's Marina Canetti tied it at 8-8 from 2 meters.

UH's Angela Turnbull fed Mason for her fourth goal of the match, and Mason converted UH's third 5-meter penalty shot at 2:47 to take a 10-8 lead.

UH's Kristy Bagnall skipped one through the right side to make it 11-8 before Keala O'Sullivan scored for Long Beach State at 1:50.

UH goalie Meike De Nooy recorded seven saves.

The Rainbow Wahine host No. 10 Arizona State tomorrow.
