UH, WAC football schedules in limbo

By Ferd Lewis

It is apparently anybody's guess when the 2007 Western Athletic Conference and University of Hawai'i's football schedules will be announced, officials said yesterday.

"There is no ETA (estimated time of announcement) and to be honest with you it is likely to be weeks rather than days," said Jeff Hurd, associate commissioner of the WAC. "It is one of those deals that there are a number of issues involved and some of them are out of our control. And, until these are taken care of we can't even begin to work on our own problems. The simplest way to put it is that until the Mid-American Conference scheduling issues are resolved it is very difficult for anything else."

Last week conference and UH officials had said they expected to have an announcement by the end of this week. UH has declined comment.

UH is among four WAC teams looking to complete their schedules, Hurd said. The Warriors have yet to announce the final three games of a 13-game schedule and the WAC is holding two September dates and one in November until they do. Boise State has two openings while Idaho and Nevada each have one.

Both of Boise State's openings involve MAC agreements as does Idaho's. Hurd said Bowling Green owes Boise State a return game from two years ago and the MAC owes the Broncos an unidentified opponent from last year when Boise State assumed a game against Utah in exchange for a MAC opponent this year. But so far, Hurd said, the team to fulfill the obligation "was never identified, still hasn't been identified and is likely not to be identified."

Asked if there is a possibility Boise State could be left with 11 of a possible 13 games, Hurd said, "That would be the worst case and, obviously, we hope that's not the case."

Hurd said, "I would say that is unlikely, highly unlikely" UH would face that kind of a scenario.

Gary Richter, associate commissioner of the Mid-America Conference, declined comment but said the conference is expected to announce its schedule, "sometime next week."
