One driver arrested after fatal collision on H-1

Advertiser Staff

A 46-year-old man from Kamehameha Heights was released pending further investigation early this morning after being booked for investigation of negligent homicide and other charges following a fatal collision yesterday.

The accident involved two Ford sports utility vehicles on the H-1 Freeway, west-bound, about 600 feet west of the Farrington Highway overpass, police said.

Police Sgt. Michael Brede said the 7:15 p.m. collision killed a 49-year-old man, whose truck collided with a Ford Expedition driven by the man who was arrested.

The collision forced the victim's vehicle to flip over after it struck a barrier.

The Expedition was forced into a guardrail and turned on its side. The man who was arrested had attempted to flee from the scene on foot but was found nearby. He was booked at 8:50 p.m. Saturday and released without charges at 5:50 a.m. today.

Speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors, Brede said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office did not release the name of the man who died at the scene.
