POLICE BEAT
Man dies in H-1 crash at Kapolei

By Mike Leidemann
Advertiser Staff Writer

One man was dead and another in custody last night following a traffic accident near Kapolei.

Police said the accident occurred about 7:15 p.m. on the H-1 Freeway west-bound Campbell off-ramp near the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.

The driver of one vehicle attempted to run away after the crash, but officers found him a short time later hiding in nearby bushes and arrested him, Kapolei police said.

A rental car involved in the crash ended upside down on the roadway, and a passenger in that vehicle was killed, police said.

Police closed the west-bound lanes of H-1 at Kapolei for several hours last night while investigating the accident.

Traffic was diverted through Kapolei town and allowed to rejoin the freeway past the Campbell Industrial Park exit.

Investigators from the police traffic homicide unit were continuing an investigation at the scene of the accident late last night.

The death was the 14th traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu compared with nine at this time last year.

Last night's death comes in the wake of the collision of an SUV and a pickup truck on Kapa'a Quarry Road late Thursday night that killed two 18-year-old women and injured five other people, one of them critically.
