Fire above Maui subdivision in Lahaina burns 300 acres

Advertiser Staff

Maui Fire Department officials said late this afternoon that a fire first reported at 11:52 a.m. today has burned 300 acres in land above the Puamana subdivision in Lahaina.

Mild winds are preventing the fire from spreading toward the residential area.

One area resident was evacuated today, but no homes have been burned, officials said.

The fire is moving mauka and has entered Department of Land and Natural Resource's Natural Area Reserve land. DLNR has activated firefighting personnel from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) to the scene to join Maui County fire crews.

Three helicopters are in use along with heavy equipment and water tankers. Maui County has 20 firefighters and four fire engines on scene.

Hokiokio Place in the Puamana subdivision is closed to traffic.
