No WAC honors for men in basketball, baseball

Advertiser Staff

Despite good games, no University of Hawai'i baseball or men's basketball player earned conference player-of-the-week award this week.

In baseball, Louisiana Tech outfielder Jericho Jones and right-handed pitcher Luke Burnett were named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Jones hit .650 (13-20) in five games as Louisiana Tech extended its winning streak to eight in a row.

In two appearances this past week, Burnett pitched eight innings, allowing no runs, no walks and two hits and struck out 16 while facing the minimum 24 batters as Tech turned two double plays.

UH nominated first baseman Kris Sanchez and left-hander Mark Rodrigues.

Sanchez has a 16-game hitting streak and topped off his week with a two-run homer against Santa Barbara. UH won two of the three games played at Santa Barbara.

Rodrigues pitched a three-hit complete-game victory over Santa Barbara. He struck out four and allowed one run.

In basketball, Boise State guard Anthony Thomas was WAC men's player of the week.

UH nominated senior guard Matt Lojeski, who scored 16 points in a 58-50 loss at Utah State and 22 in a 93-78 upset win at Long Beach State.
