Punahou, University earn top seeds in state boys basketball

Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Punahou is the No. 1 seed for the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association boys basketball championships starting Tuesday at McKinley and Radford.

O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kaimuki is the No. 2 seed, followed by Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Kamehameha-Hawai'i (No. 3) and Maui Interscholastic League champion Kamehameha-Maui (No. 4).

In first-round action at Radford Tuesday, Campbell plays Saint Louis at 6, followed by ILH runner-up and five-time defending state champ 'Iolani against MIL runner-up Baldwin at 8. Also on Tuesday at McKinley, OIA runner-up Kalaheo plays BIIF runner-up and regular season champion Honoka'a at 6, followed by traditional OIA rivals Moana-lua and Radford meeting at 8.

In the inaugural Division II state tournament, the ILH's University High received the No. 1 seed, followed by OIA White Conference champion 'Aiea (No. 2), BIIF DII champ Kohala (No. 3) and MIL Division II champion Seabury Hall (No. 4).

In first-round action Tuesday at Farrington, Hawai'i Baptist plays Moloka'i at 6, followed by Academy of the Pacific against Kaua'i. Also on Tuesday at Kaimuki, Farrington faces Pahoa at 6 and McKinley plays St. Joseph at 8.
