Mauka Lani Elementary to get 'safe room'

Advertiser Staff

The state will spend $505,000 for renovations to the library and administration building at Mauka Lani Elementary in Kapolei to provide a safe room for students and faculty in case of a chemical or hazardous material emergency.

Gov. Linda Lingle today announced that she was releasing the money for this project, known as a "shelter-in-place."

The renovations are required for the school — which is within five miles of Campbell Industrial Park —to meet health and safety regulations. The state will replace seals on all doors and windows and modify the air-conditioning systems to include a closed loop system that would circulate air during an emergency.

"Of course the hope is that these precautionary measures will never have to be employed, but we want to be prepared by ensuring the safety of our students and teachers," Lingle said.

Construction is expected to be completed by November 2008.
