KIHEI, Maui — A 38-year-old Kihei man was charged with manslaughter after allegedly loading a firearm that his girlfriend used to kill herself.

Jack E. Neary was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of Lilian S. Wilson, 29, who shot herself just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday at her home on Kenolio Road in Kihei.

Police said Neary was present when Wilson was shot and that he later told detectives he had loaded the ammunition into her handgun.

The case is being investigated as a possible homicide, said acting Lt. Brian Kaya of the Maui Police Department. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

Neary was initially arrested for an unrelated bench warrant, in which his bail was set at $25,000. He was released after posted that bail and the additional $20,000 set for the manslaughter charge.
