Police arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of several felony offenses early yesterday morning at the former Barbers Point Air Station after he was stopped initially for a minor traffic offense.Police said a patrol officer saw the man speeding on a moped near the intersection of Coral Sea Road and Independence Street about 12:45 a.m. and pulled him over to write up a ticket.
The officer then found the moped had been reported stolen and the operator had several outstanding contempt warrants, and he began to place him under arrest, police said.
At that point, the man on the moped told the officer he had a .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol in the left front pocket of his shorts, police said.
After retrieving the gun, the officer continued to search the moped rider and reported finding two packets of what appeared to be crystal meth and a glass pipe with residue in it, police said.
The officer then arrested the man on suspicion of carrying a firearm in public, first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
