Advertiser Staff

Maui firefighters are resuming the fight at daylight against a brushfire above the Puamana subdivision in Lahaina.

More than 1,000 acres had burned by 7:30 p.m. last night and residents of the subdivision were evacuated as the fire neared homes, Maui County officials said.

The fire was first reported at 11:52 a.m. yesterday.

Helicopters used to fight the blaze overnight was suspended for safety reasons, but city spokeswoman Mahina Martin said three helicopters will resume dumping water on the blaze at daylight.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources is also joining in the effort to fight the blaze.

Maui County has 20 firefighters and four fire engines on scene.

Hokiokio Place in the Puamana subdivision is closed to traffic.
