Man pleads not guilty to murder of deputy sheriff

By Jim Dooley
Advertiser Staff Writer

The man accused of murdering off-duty deputy sheriff Daniel Browne-Sanchez pleaded not guilty this morning and the case was assigned to Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto, already under fire from city Prosecutor Peter Carlisle for delayed sentencing of the same defendant in another criminal case.

Carlisle said last week that Browne-Sanchez's death Feb. 10 could have been avoided if John Koa Lorenzo Jr. had been sentenced in a timely manner in a pending drug case.

Sakamoto delayed sentencing of Lorenzo last year and again last month to allow the defendant time to complete drug treatment. A sentencing hearing in the drug case is scheduled before Judge Sakamoto tomorrow morning.

Lorenzo entered a not guilty plea today to 13 new charges, including murder, attempted murder kidnapping and firearms offenses. He allegedly entered the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge on Kapi'olani Boulevard at 3 a.m. Feb. 10 armed with a silencer-equipped handgun, shooting Browne-Sanchez to death during a failed robbery attempt.

Browne-Sanchez, 27, an off-duty state deputy sheriff, was working as a bartender's assistant at Osake.

Lorenzo, 32, also known as Patrick Lorenzo, is being held on $5 million bail.
