'Bows' next foe, Wichita State, sweeps UH-Hilo

Damon Sublett and Andy Dirks each had four hits and No. 12 Wichita State beat Hawaii-Hilo, 11-4, tonight to complete a nonconference baseball doubleheader sweep at Hilo's Wong Stadium.

Sublett had four RBIs from a two-run single in a four-run third inning and a two-run triple in a three-run eighth.

Vulcans' starter Lars Knepper (0-3) had eight strikeouts in seven innings, but allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks.

The Shockers improved to 3-2 and the Vulcans remained winless at 0-11.

The series continues with a doubleheader at noon tomorrow at Wong.

In the first game, Aaron Shafer pitched five strong innings to lift Wichita State to a 7-3 win.

Shafer (1-0) allowed a run and three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts for the Shockers. Three relievers each followed with 1 1/3 innings of work to finish off the Vulcans. Shafer is scheduled to start Saturday against UH-Manoa.

The Vulcans' Dayne Ogawa was 2 for 4 with a home run.

Joe Davis (0-3) allowed six runs (three unearned), seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings for the Vulcans.
