Hawai'i was 35th on the list — tied with Washington, Maryland and South Carolina — each of which had 5.0 residents killed in Iraq per 500,000 residents.

At the top of the list was Vermont, with 14 fatalities per 500,000 residents.

At the bottom of the list was New Jersey, with a fatality rate of 3.0 per 500,000 residents.
