Pacific Whale Foundation president and founder Greg Kaufman will present a talk and video show titled "The Imperiled Humpback Whales of the Southern Hemisphere" on Thursday as part of Pacific Whale Foundation's Making Waves Lecture Series.

The talk will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Maui at the Pacific Whale Foundation's Discovery Center at The Harbor Shops at Ma'alaea.

Kaufman's talk will include the world premier of rare underwater high-definition video of a tiger shark and great white shark attack on a humpback whale in Australia, as witnessed by Pacific Whale Foundation researchers this past season. He will also show video footage of six mother and calf pods associating and cavorting — a sight so rare that until recently, most scientists believed that humpback mothers with calves did not associate with other mothers and calves.

Kaufman has studied humpback whales in the South Pacific since 1978, including populations of whales off Tonga, Australia and Ecuador that are currently targeted by Japanese whaling ships.

"These whales feed near Antarctica each year, which is where the whaling ships are targeting them," Kaufman said in a news release. "All of these whales come from breeding areas scattered around the South Pacific."

A book signing will follow the talk, featuring Kaufman's newest book, "125 Fun Facts About Humpback Whales." Refreshments will be available for sale, or people may bring their own brown-bag dinners.
