No. 12 Wichita State sweeps UH-Hilo, 'Bows up next

Conor Gillaspie's grand slam in the top of the eighth inning broke a 2-all deadlock to lift No. 12 Wichita State over Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-2, today to complete a doubleheader sweep at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

The Shockers (5-2) won the earlier game, 9-2, and swept the four-game series from the Vulcans (0-13). Wichita State will play UH-Manoa in a three-game series starting Friday.

Khol Nanney (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings of relief for WSU, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Karl Maas (0-1) gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief for the Vulcans.

In the opener, Damon Sublett drove in three runs and Travis Banwart pitched five strong innings to lead Wichita State.

Sublett was one of four Shockers to get two hits. He also pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

Banwart (1-1) allowed two runs, four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Jeffrey Germain (0-2) was tagged for five runs, eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings for the Vulcans.
