Long Beach State sophomore utility player Keala O'Sullivan scored a goal in her return trip to Hawai'i, but the No. 12 49ers lost to the No. 4 Rainbow Wahine, 11-9, Saturday.

O'Sullivan, a 2005 Kamehameha graduate, is named after her aunt Keala O'Sullivan Watson, the bronze winner in diving at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

SOFTBALL

  • Tennessee sophomore shortstop Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05 from Wahiawa) hit her first home run of the season in a 5-0 win over Illinois Saturday.

    GOLF

  • Stanford sophomore Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) tied for 37th in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club (par-71, 5,912 yards) in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Chun shot 76-76-80—232 in the tournament that ended Feb. 14.

  • Gonzaga junior Sarah Sheffield (Kea'au '04) tied for 24th in the UC Riverside Lady Braveheart Challenge at the Oak Valley Golf Club (par-72, 6,080 yards) in Beaumont, Calif. Sheffield shot 78-84—162 in the tournament that ended Feb. 13.

    SWIMMING

  • Lindenwood (St. Charles, Mo.) senior Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) won the 100 butterfly in 59.96 seconds at the Liberal Arts Championships Saturday.

    Nakamoto also placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.03), ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.51) and was part of three winning relays: 200 freestyle (1:39.81), 400 medley (4:05.51) and 400 freestyle (3:38.84).

    Junior Jon Lau ('Iolani '04) was third in the 200 individual medley (2:01.37), and fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.33) and 200 butterfly (2:00.02). His 200 medley relay team won (1:35.02) while his 200 freestyle relay team (1:26.99) and 400 medley relay team (3:29.16) placed second.

    Junior Chris Ricketts (Mid-Pacific '04), who also swam on all three relay teams with Lau, was part of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished second (3:10.82).

    Ricketts also was second in the 50 freestyle (21.60), and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.77) and 100 freestyle (48.01).

    Junior Mandy Chun (Iolani '04) was seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:23.29), ninth in the 400 individual medley (5:05.87) and 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:33.07). Her 800 freestyle relay team placed third (8:26.62).

    Freshman Jenna Nakamoto (Kalani '06) was 11th in the 200 breaststroke (2:46.79), 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.53) and 15th in the 100 individual medley (2:30.76).

    BASEBALL

  • San Jose State senior outfielder Chris Balatico (Mililani '03) batted 5 for 9 with three RBIs, a double and a steal in a sweep of visiting Utah over the weekend.

  • San Diego State junior shortstop Troy Hanzawa (Mid-Pacific '03) batted 5 for 11 with two triples, four runs and three RBIs in a three-game series against Southern California over the weekend. He is batting .333 and leads the Aztecs with 11 runs and 13 hits.

  • Navy senior infielder Michael Garcia (Kalaheo '02) batted 4 for 9 with two runs and two RBIs in a three-game sweep of Iona in Annapolis, Md. He leads the team in hitting at .500 (11 for 22).

  • Linfield (Division III) junior second baseman Shannon Chung (Kalani '04) batted 5 for 14 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs to help his team finish 3-1 in the Arizona Invitational over the weekend.

  • Lewis-Clark State (NAIA) senior first baseman Ikaika Lester (Moloka'i '01) batted 6 for 10 with two doubles and four RBIs to help the host Warriors go 4-0 and win the Regence BlueShield of Idaho Tournament over the weekend in Lewiston, Idaho.

    In the second game of the tournament, senior right-hander Jared Joaquin (Maui '98) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings in a 9-2 win against Whitworth.

  • Central Arizona JC outfielder C.J. Johnson ('Iolani 2006) batted 4 for 7 with a double, home run and three RBIs yesterday in a doubleheader split against Phoenix.

  • LeTourneau University (Longview, Texas) junior outfielder Ethan Cravalho (Ka'ahumanu Hou '04 of Honoka'a) led the team with a double, three RBIs and two runs in a 15-7 loss to Austin College Feb. 13.
