Mayor Mufi Hannemann this morning said he will be asking for increases in sewer fees to fund improvements to O'ahu's sewer system.

In his annual State of the City address, Hannemann said he wants to avoid problems like the rupture to a force main in Waikiki that led to the diversion of 48 million gallons of sewage into the Ala Wai.

Hannemann did not detail the increases, but said the proposal would be in his administration's budget next week for fiscal year 2008.

The mayor also proposed curbside pickup for recyclables this year, but said community input is a first step. He said they'll be holding public meetings in April and May to determine where and how to launch the new service.

"The final program is far from definite, but for the sake of discussion, we are proposing once-a-week curbside pickup of regular trash and once-a-week curbside pickup of greenwaste and mixed recyclables, the latter on an every other week basis," he said.

He said if once-a-week trash collection isn't enough, a homeowner could add a second pickup for a $10 monthly fee.
