Repairs planned on Kona deep-sea water pipes

Advertiser Staff

The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority said it recently discovered damage to two pipelines used to draw deep-sea water from a depth of 2,000 feet off the Kona Coast.

Ron Baird, chief executive officer for NELHA, said the damage was likely a result of last October's earthquakes. Baird said one pipeline has been severed, while another has a hole that has since been patched.

The damage isn't affecting the availability of water for aquaculture operators that rely on water from the 2,000-foot pipelines. Water bottling companies, which use water from a separate 3,000-foot pipeline, also are unaffected, Baird said.

NELHA hopes to have the damaged pipelines repaired by the end of summer. There was no estimate of the cost of damage.
