Maui crews continue watch over smoldering brushfire

Maui County firefighters are continuing to monitor areas of the brushfire that started on Sunday in Lahaina and burned a total of about 1,350 acres.

Division of Forestry and Wildlife crews are watching over the smoldering fire that entered the state Natural Area Reserve and the Pana'ewa section of the West Maui Forest Reserve.

Populated areas remain at 100 percent containment.

Of the total acres burned, 29 are in the forest reserve and 91 are in the Pana'ewa section of the Natural Area Reserve. The reserve comprises 1,717 acres and is administered by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
