Kailua student in finals of Sprite music contest

Kanoa Doblin, a Kailua resident and student at Honolulu Waldorf School in Kahala, is among the final three candidates in an online quest for music to accompany national Sprite ads featuring basketball star LeBron James.

"I am so happy I've made it this far," said Doblin, who was one of 6,000 who submitted entries when the campaign was launched in January. The field was whittled down by public vote.

"It's real exciting. I told my mom my song is going to win it all — and I might actually win it."

LeBron James, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was seen during the recent Super Bowl telecast, in a Bubblicious TV commercial. James also has appeared in Sprite spots and the campaign to select new music from non-traditional sources instead of an ad agency has created a buzz among industry types — and soft drink sippers.

"Sprite drinkers will be able to put their own musical stamp on the campaign and help create an exclusive theme song for LeBron by taking part in the new LeBron 23-23 promotion," said Scott Hargrove, brand director of Sprite, Coca-Cola North America, in an online statement.

Doblin said he got hooked on Apple's GarageBand software about 18 months ago and has been tinkering with music since. "For me, this and basketball help vent out anything in my life. It allows me to explore new horizons," he said.
