Aloha Airlines offers deal for sumo tourney on O'ahu

Associated Press

Aloha Airlines is offering special travel packages for residents of other islands who want to fly to O'ahu for Hawai'i's first professional sumo tournament in over a decade, the company said today.

The Japan Sumo Association plans to bring dozens of wrestlers from Japan to Honolulu's Blaisdell Arena for a two-day Grand Sumo Tournament in early June.

It will be the first such event in the Islands since 1993.

The last sanctioned grand sumo tournament in the United States was held in Las Vegas two years ago.

The Aloha Airlines' packages include air fare, hotel rooms, a rental car and tournament tickets, the company said in a news release.

Promoter Shigemitsu Inohana has said he hopes to hold similar tournaments in the Islands every two years if this year's event is successful.
