Burning rag in gas can prompts arson probe at high rise

Police opened a first-degree arson investigation this morning after a burning rag was found sticking out of a plastic gas container on the 23rd floor of a business building in Waikiki.Police said building security workers were responding to a smoke detector alarm when they found the burning rag. The rag was attached to a partially filled plastic gasoline container.
The security workers were able to extinguish the fire before any major damage could occur, police said.
A room adjacent to where the fire was started was occupied at the time, but there were no injuries, police said.
