Army Community Theatre's season now under way

Advertiser Staff

Recent and classic theatrical musicals will be part of the Army Community Theatre's 2007-2008 season.

The shows, to be staged at Richardson Theatre at Fort Shafter, will include:

  • "Once Upon a Mattress," Sept. 6 through 22. It's a musical by Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer, based on a book by Jay Thompson, and adapted from the fairy tale, "The Princess and the Pea."

  • A surprise show, yet to be named, Nov. 15 through Dec. 1.

  • "Aida," Feb. 28 through March 25. It is a Tony Award-winning Elton John-Tim Rice take on the classic Egyptian operatic tale.

  • "Bye Bye Birdie," May 8 through 24. It is a satirical musical by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse, based on a book by Michael Stewart, about a rock 'n' roller being inducted into the Army, inspired by the fate of Elvis Presley.

The roster was announced at the opening of the current musical, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," which opened last night.

Musicals premiere at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, followed by Friday-Saturday performances.

Season tickets, priced at $75, are available now at the ACT Box Office, 438-4480 or www.squareone.org/ACT.

In addition, director Vanita Rae Smith announced the Readers Theatre season:

  • "The Three Sisters," Anton Chekov.

  • "The Wild Duck," Henrik Ibsen.

  • "The Great God Brown," Eugene O'Neill.

  • "The Visit," Friedrich Durrenmatt.

The shows run at 2 p.m. Sundays, produced concurrently with the mainstage musicals.
