Wichita State beats Hawai'i in baseball, 7-1

Rob Musgrave pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-hit ball and No. 12 Wichita State beat Hawai'i, 7-1, Friday night in the opener of the three-game nonconference baseball series at Les Murakami Stadium.Musgrave (2-0) allowed a run, one hit and a walk with five strikeouts for the Shockers (6-2), winners of six in a row. He was perfect until two outs in the seventh, when second baseman Damon Sublett committed a fielding error on a grounder by Justin Frash. He took a no-hitter until two outs in the eighth, when Landon Hernandez doubled home UH's only run.
Ian Harrington (2-3) gave up five runs (three eanred), six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings for UH (9-4).
The Shockers broke the scoreless deadlock in the fifth. Matt Brown led off with a single and after Cody Lassley bunted into a foul out to the catcher, Blake Hurlbutt walked. Tyler Weber his a high chopper to third baseman Justin Frash, who misplayed the hop into a two-base error that allowed both runners to score. Harrington got the next two batters to end the inning and making the runs unearned.
The Shockers scored again in the sixth. Derek Schermerhorn led off with a single, took second when Damon Sublett grounded out to second, stole third and scored on Conor Gillaspie's ground single to right against a drawn-in infield to make it 3-0. Brown flied out to center and Lassley struck out to end the inning.
Wichita State increased its lead in the seventh. Hurlbutt led off with a single to left, took second on Weber's sacrifice and after Noah Krol struck out, scored on Andy Dirks' single to right-center to make it 4-0. Harrington was pulled for Craig Johnson, who was greeted with a two-run home run by Schermerhorn to make it 6-0.
The Rainbows broke up the no-hitter in the eighth after two were out. Evan Zimny walked and scored on Landon Hernandez's double to right-center to pull UH to 6-1, ending Musgrave's night for Jared Simon. After pinch-hitter Derek DuPree reached on a single to third that sent Hernandez to third, Jorge Franco struck out to end the inning.
The Shockers added a run in the ninth against Nick Rhodes. With one out, Dirks walked and took third on Schermerhorn's single to right. Rhodes was pulled for Jeff Soskin. Damon Sublett's ground out to second scored Dirks and moved Schermerhorn to second. Schermerhorn stole third before Gillaspie popped out to first to end the inning.
