MILILANI — A young woman was killed and two men badly injured tonight when a car hit a tree along one of Mililani's main roads.

A police officer said it appeared the car, a red four-door Volkswagen Jetta, was speeding southbound on a bend on Lanikuhana Avenue when it went out of control and hit a tree near Lea Place. The accident happened about 9:30 p.m.

A woman, described as in her late teens or early 20s, died at the site of the crash. Police said she was a passenger in the car and was pinned inside the smashed vehicle.

Two men were taken to The Queen's Medical Center, one in critical condition and the other in serious condition. Both were described as in their early 20s.

Police said the man who was critically injured was thrown from the car. It was not known if he was the driver or a passenger. Witnesses said the three people are area residents.

Police closed Lanikuhana Avenue between Mahinahou and Kealakaa streets.

Residents said they heard a crash, but it was not known if there were any eyewitnesses.
