MA'ALAEA
Volunteering for whale count

Advertiser Staff

Volunteers can sign up for the Pacific Whale Foundation's annual Great Whale Count to be held tomorrow on Maui.

Training will begin at 8 a.m., with the count from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 13 shore-based counting stations from Makena to Kapalua and at Ho'okipa. Observers will count whales sighted within three miles of shore and record their behavior.

To volunteer, e-mail Danielle Calef at Danielle@pacificwhale.org or call (808) 244-8392.

There are an estimated 12,000 to 14,000 humpback whales in the North Pacific, with about 60 percent of the population spending the winter in Hawai'i to mate, calve and nurse their young.
