University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville has emerged as the top candidate for the head football coaching job at Portland State, The Advertiser has learned.
Glanville will arrive in Portland Sunday, have a face-to-face interview with PSU officials all Monday, and leave Tuesday or Wednesday, according to people familiar with the situation.
When asked about his candidacy, Glanville said: "I really can't comment at this time. I'm sorry. I just can't comment."
UH head coach June Jones said he did not want to comment publicly on the situation.
But sources confirm that PSU interim athletic director Teri Mariani requested — and received — permission from Jones to interview Glanville.
Mariani has set the application deadline for tomorrow, and is expected to fill the position late next week.
PSU officials originally planned to offer a two-year contract to the next head football coach, but now are willing to extend the length of the deal for a candidate with Glanville's background.
Glanville was head coach of the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons. After a 12-year hiatus, during which he was a television football analyst and race-car owner and driver, Glanville joined the Warriors as defensive coordinator in April 2005.
According to sources, if Glanville is hired at PSU, he would offer the job of offensive coordinator to UH assistant coach Mouse Davis. Davis was a successful PSU head coach in the 1970s and 1980s, when his run-and-shoot offense broke several national records.
Meanwhile, according to Jones, athletic director Herman Frazier is set to announce a complete 13-game schedule for the 2007 football season. Jones said he was told the announcement probably will be made Tuesday, when Frazier returns from a trip to Philadelphia. Jones said Frazier did not tell him which three teams will be added to finalize the schedule. So far, UH has eight Western Athletic Conference games and non-conference games against Nevada-Las Vegas and Washington.
