Two Hawai'i boxers triumph

Hawai'i's Bruno Escalante and Keola McKee won boxing matches at the La Casa Show on Saturday in Waukesha, Wis.

Escalante, of Waimanalo, stopped Jim Maher of Rapids, Wis., in the third round at 119 pounds.

McKee, of Wailuku, Maui, defeated Stephan Young, of St. Louis, 5-4, at 106 pounds.

Both matches were scheduled for four two-minute rounds.

Escalante and McKee are training at the United States Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, where they are freshmen.

Three other USOEC boxers also won their matches at the Waukesha meet.

TAEKWONDO

CAJIMAT, ISHIDA WIN

Two Hawai'i athletes won gold medals at the U.S. Open Taekwondo Championships on Saturday at Orlando, Fla.

The meet was for athletes ages 14 to 18.

Jayme Cajimat of 'Ewa Beach was awarded the gold in men's flyweight (99.4 to 105.8 pounds) division when his opponent in the final withdrew. Camat won three matches en route to the final.

Jensen Ishida of Waipahu won five matches, including a 4-2 victory over Matthew Yim of Virginia in the championship of the bantam (106 to 112.4 pounds) division.
