ROAD TO THE PROS: DANE UPERESA
Tests of all kinds greet NFL prospects

Thursday, Feb. 22: It's been busy.

I've seen my hotel room for a total of a half-hour. The rest of the time I'm out or asleep. But it's been exciting to get an opportunity to meet with NFL teams that you've seen on TV.

I got in Wednesday. They told us to check into a room, change our clothes and go straight to the hospital for tests. We spent a long time doing X-rays and medical exams. At night, we did a lot of interviews that kept us up pretty late.

We woke up early to do more drug tests and physicals today. It was a long process. There are 32 NFL teams, and each one has a medical staff of about five. That's 32 NFL physicals. They pull and push every part of your body. I'm tired, but I'm sure the doctors are tired, too. You can imagine how they feel seeing some 300-odd players.

Everything came out OK. I've been lucky enough not to miss a game because of an injury during my UH career.

After that, we went into a big ballroom setting for interviews.

We had to wear the stuff they issued. Reebok was the sponsor. They had shirts with your name on it, and NFL-issued shorts. It was easy to identify each player.

Each team has a table, and there are six to eight people at each table.

They're running all over the place to catch you. It's so crowded. You lose your bearings. Sometimes you forget who you're talking to. But every interview you have to be focused and answer each question appropriately.

The teams have to learn to play nice with other teams. They respect when a player is talking to another team, although they do stand on the side and wait.

I met with the Cowboys, Jets, Bengals, Panthers, Bears and Dolphins.

They ask about your family. They ask about your background. Surprisingly, there aren't a lot of football-related questions. They want to know about your character.

One of the teams asked: "In a street fight, who would win — me, Sam (Satele) or Tala (Esera)?" Let's put it this way, I couldn't hesitate. Of course, I had to say myself. I'm being tested, you know. But they were asked the same questions, so the scouts got three different answers.
