UH's Wichmann, Murray win at WAC track and field

University of Hawai'i junior Annett Wichmann captured the pentathlon and Rainbow Wahine senior Novelle Murray won the weight throw in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships today at Nampa, Idaho.

Wichmann won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 5› inches and finished with 3,830 points in the five-event discipline that also includes the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and 800-meter run.

Cal State Northridge's Lashana Verdon was second with 3,783 points. UH senior Mallory Gilbert placed sixth with a personal-best 3,456 points.

Murray threw the weight 63 feet, 3A inches to easily beat runner-up Eleni Ypsilanti of Boise State, who recorded a throw of 60-11A.

Cal State Northridge edge last year's champion, Louisiana Tech, by 2.5 points, 117.5-114, to win the team title. Hawai'i moved up one spot from last year to finish sixth with 53.5 points.
