State high school swimming and diving finals today

The Local Motion/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association swimming and diving state championships are being held today at Veterans' Memorial Aquatic Center at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The diving finals started at 8:30 a.m.; the swimming finals began at 1 p.m.

Four meet records were broken during qualifying yesterday.

Christal Simms of Punahou set records in the girls 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Simms swam the 100 in 50.54 seconds (51.27 was the previous mark) and the 200 in 1:49.92 (1:50.46).

Daniel Coakley of Kealakehe broke the boys 50 freestyle record in 20.46 seconds (The previous mark was 20.73).

Punahou's Brittany Beauchan set the girls mark in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.04 (previous record was 1:04.10).

Team titles also will be awarded today. Kamehameha is the defending boys champion, and Punahou is the defending girls champion.
