Hawai'i student wins Rube Goldberg contest at Purdue

Ian Esaki, a freshman majoring in materials science and engineering from Kapa'a was a first place winner in the 2007 Local Rube Goldberg Machine Contest held today at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.Esaki is a member of the Purdue Society of Professional Engineers team.
The annual competition rewards creativity and efficiency in completing a simple task. This year's task was to create a machine that employed principles of engineering and physics to take a whole orange, juice it and then pour the juice from a pitcher into a cup in a minimum of 20 steps.
The winning team will compete at the National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest that will take place at 10:30 a.m. March 31 at Purdue University.
The contest honors the late cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who specialized in drawing whimsical, complicated machines to perform simple tasks.
