Wichita State sweeps Rainbows with 5-4 baseball win

Travis Banwart pitched five strong innings and No. 12 Wichita State held off Hawai'i, 5-4, today to complete a doubleheader and series sweep at Les Murakami Stadium. it was the Shockers' eighth win in a row.

It was was the first time UH has been swept in a three-game series since the season opener against Texas in 2004; the last time the Rainbows (9-6) lost a series was April 7 to 9 against Fresno State, which won 2 of 3.

Banwart (2-1) allowed a run, seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts for the Shockers (8-2). Noah Krol allowed a run in the ninth, but stranded the tying and winning runs on base and notched his third save.

The Shockers took a 2-0 lead in the second. With one out, Tyler Hill singled and took second on Cody Lassley's flair single to right. On a pick-off attempt at first that first baseman Kris Sanchez had to dive for, Hill stole third. Lassley then stole second. Hill scored on Ryan Jones' sacrifice fly to center. Dusty Coleman singled to left to scored Lassley and took second on the throw home before Josh Workman grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Hawai'i got an unearned run in the bottom of the second. Brandon Haislet reached on a bunt single to third and scored when Jon Hee hit a squibbler back to the pitcher Banwart, whose throw to first was wild, allowing to Hee to take second. But Landon Hernandez grounded out to short, with Hee holding second and taking third when Evan Zimny grounded out to first and was stranded there when Ryan Asato struck out.

The Shockers added two more in the third. Derek Schermerhorn led off with a single and scored on Damon Sublett's double to right-center. Sublett took third on Conor Gillaspie's sacrifice, held the bag when Matt Brown grounded out to third, but scored on Tyler Hill's single to left to make it 4-1.

The Shockers added a run in the eighth. Schermerhorn doubled off Schneider, who was pulled for Tyler Davis. Schermerhorn took third when Sublett grounded out to second and scored on a a drawn-in infield when Gillaspie grounded out to second on a high chopper to second baseman Hee to make it 5-1.

Hawai'i cut its deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Sanchez and Haislet singled to start the inning against Noah Booth, who was lifted for Noah Krol. Pinch hitter Kevin Macdonald's ground out to third moved the runners, but Hernandez struck out. Evan Zimny's bloop double to right scored both runners to make it 5-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Derek DuPree singled up the middle. After Nate Young struck out, Justin Frash walked moving DuPree to second. Sanchez singled to driive in DuPree to make it 5-4. Haislet popped out to second and Macdonald flied out to center to end the game.
