Wichita State pounds UH in doubleheader opener, 10-4

Conor Gillaspie drove in four runs and hit a three-run home run to lead No. 12 Wichita State over Hawai'i, 10-4, today in the first game of a doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium

The game was a makeup for last night's rainout.

Aaron Shafer (2-1) gave up four runs, five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for the Shockers (7-2). Anthony Capra pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for his first save.

Mark Rodrigues (4-1) lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing five runs and seven hits with one strikeout for UH (9-5), which dropped its first series since April 7 to 9 when Fresno State took 2 of 3.

The Rainbows took a 1-0 lead in the first. Derek DuPree led off with a double to left -center. Jon Hee then hit a squibbler up the third base line. Hee beat out the grounder for an infield single that sent DuPree to third. But first baseman Derek Schermerhorn could not hang on to the throw from pitcher Aaron Shafer, allowing DuPree to score. Hee was caught stealing second, Justin Frash flied out to center and Brandon Haislet struck out to end the inning.

The Shockers took the lead in the second. Danny Jackson and Matt Brown hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning to tie the game at 1.Brown stole third and scored when Blake Hurlbutt grounded out to shortstop. Tyler Weber flied out to deep center and Noah Krol popped out to second to end the inning with WSU leading 2-1.

The Shockers chased Rodrigues in the third. With one out, Schermerhorn singled and took third on a hit-and-run single by Damon Sublett, setting up Gillaspie's three-run home run to right. After Danny Jackson singled, Rodrigues was pulled for Matt Daly. He got Brown on a fly to left, but walked Hurlbutt. Weber singled to third to load the bases, but Krol grounded out to second to leave the bases loaded with the Shockers up 5-1.

Hawai'i got one back in the fourth when Frash led off the inning with a home run to right, his first of the season to make it 5-2. Haislet reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, but was erased on a caught stealing when Kris Sanchez took a called third strike. Landon Hernandez flied out to center to end the inning.

Wichita State added three in the fifth to increase its lead to 8-2. Hurlbutt's two-run single and Weber's RBI single off the left field wall accounted for the runs against Daly.

Hawai'i added two in the sixth to end Shafer's day. Hernandez drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk, the third free pass by Shafer in the inning. Anthony Capra came in to face Evan Zimny, who reached on an RBI single to first before Eli Christensen grounded out to end the inning.

The Shockers got two in the eighth on a RBI singles by Sublett and Gillaspie to make it 10-4.
