'The Departed' wins Academy Award for best picture

LOS ANGELES — The mob saga "The Departed" won the best-picture Academy Award on Sunday, a triumph for a homegrown American film in an evening that featured the most internationally diverse field of nominees in the history of Hollywood's highest honors.

Martin Scorsese finally won the best-director Academy Award that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career, taking the prize Sunday for his mob epic "The Departed" after five previous losses.

Other winners so far:

Best actor: Forest Whitaker for "The Last King of Scotland."

Best actress: Helen Mirren for "The Queen."

Best documentary: "An Inconvenient Truth."

Supporting Actor: Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine"
